PROGRAM INFORMATION
Tradition
The Oak Ridge High School Band is an award winning organization with a strong tradition of excellence. The band is under the direction of Jerriald Dillard, Madeline Gregory, Aaron Bouchard and Mikaila Banks.
The Oak Ridge Band was featured in the 2012 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade in New York City.
Oak Ridge High School is located 25 miles north of Houston, TX. The Oak Ridge High School Band performance opportunities include: Marching Band, 4 Concert Bands, Percussion Ensemble, Chamber Music, Solo Contest, and Color Guard.
The Oak Ridge Band strives to create a family atmosphere, where all of our students are welcome and nurtured into the best musicians, leaders, and contributors that they can be by the time that they graduate from high school.
All students are members of the Marching Band and Concert Band, as all Guard students are members of the Color Guard and Winter Guard (fall and spring seasons).
Marching Band
The Marching Band performs at all Varsity Football Games and competes in many contests in the month of October including Bands of America, UIL, and regional Competitions.
The Marching Band rehearses 3 days a week with games typically on Friday night and Contests typically on Saturdays. The typical rehearsal schedule is:
Monday: Off day to go to tutorials and Doctor appointments
Tuesday: 3:15 – 5:45 p.m.
Wednesday: 3:15 – 5:15 p.m.
Thursday: 3:15 – 5:45 p.m.
Friday: 3:00 – 5:00 p.m., then Game-day activities
Concert Bands
The Oak Ridge Band Program has 4 Concert Bands that students audition for placement into. All students that audition are members of one of our concert bands. No student is cut from the program because of their ability on their instrument.
Bands are directed as follows:
Wind Ensemble, directed by Mr. Dillard
Symphonic Band, directed by Ms. Gregory
Concert Band I, directed by Mr. Bouchard
The Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band and Concert Band I each have sectionals after school starting in January. Sectional times are scheduled in the band class with students’ input to make try to accommodate spring semester activities.
Students are graded throughout the spring semester on the mastery of their music and individual skills on their instruments. Attendance at sectionals and performances is a major portion of their grade.
Color Guard
The color guard program is directed by Mikaila Banks. The Oak Ridge Color Guard follows the marching band schedule for the summer and fall.
Starting in November, guard students audition for placement in their Winter Guard. We have two guards, Varsity Guard and JV Guard. Both guards compete in Winter Guard International and in the Texas Color Guard Circuit.
Percussion Ensemble
The percussion ensemble is directed by Mr. Dillard. Percussion ensemble starts in November and rehearses on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m.
